Bishop Emien: the sign of the Pope's presence with the people of Mali!

On Wednesday, February 2, the Pope appointed Apostolic Nuncio to Mali, Msgr. Mambé Jean-Sylvain Emien. In an interview granted to Vatican Radio, the diplomat believes that his appointment testifies to the presence of the Holy Father and of the whole Church in Mali, which has experienced a difficult security situation for years due to terrorism.

"I give thanks to God for the confidence that the Pope and my superiors have placed in me for this service",  Mgr Mambé Jean-Sylvain Emien, the first Apostolic Nuncio of Ivorian origin, immediately confided, considering that " his as apostolic nuncio to Mali is the mark of attention and closeness of Pope Francis towards the bishops, the Christians, and all the Malian people who for years have suffered from terrorist attacks .

Mali has been the scene since 2012 of operations by jihadist groups linked to Al-Qaeda and the Islamic State organization, which have caused hundreds of deaths and thousands of displaced people. "The Pope wants to be close to the Malians and support them in their martyrdom, because Mali is a people bruised by all these terrorist attacks" , he maintained.

Unity and dialogue in a context of embargo

Since January 9, Mali has been under embargo of ECOWAS, the Economic Community of West African States. The sub-regional organization sanctioned the will of the military junta in power after the coups of August 2020 and May 2021, to continue to lead for several years, thereby renouncing the promise to organize elections in the date of February 27.

Faced with this painful situation for the Malian populations, the new representative of the Pope in the country recommends a sincere dialogue between the Malian authorities and ECOWAS. “It is only through dialogue that Mali will be able to achieve true peace and its development”.

“The Vatican has always advocated dialogue, for the resolution of all crises. And I, as the Pope's representative to these people, I will share with them the Holy Father's proposals that could contribute to the search for peace in Mali,” said Bishop Emien.
